The Year 2026 Dubbed the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.

My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Given that a gathering of frogs is called an army, it appears they are staking their claim.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. However, their visibility has noticeably surged in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an staggering number of results. While, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are serious amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this phenomenon, I performed a detailed review into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My criteria was based on clear indicators, counting games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The findings tell a compelling story: a consistent rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's growing prominence in the public consciousness is also apparent elsewhere, like the revival of Frog and Toad as nostalgic figures. However, the explosion in gaming looks uniquely powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs possess built-in appealing traits for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their elastic legs and sticky tongues lend themselves to a myriad of creative gameplay ideas.

Many of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

What the Future Holds

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year so far.

When these games find success—and traditionally, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we could very well be on the verge of a genuine croaking cultural moment.
