Patients Stopping Weight-Loss Injections Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to Those on Conventional Diets
Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who stop traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"Individuals using such treatments should be informed of the risk of quick weight regain when the treatment ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery means a return to original weight within about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The research, which examined 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the effects of these new drugs with older methods.
The team note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically have a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the heightened rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Condition?
Health authorities suggest the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a intense resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch activating and you become starving," recalled an individual.
This challenge is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Survey data indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss relies on ongoing lifestyle management.
