Alleged Stalker Questioned: 'But What If I Am Madeleine?'
A individual indicted with harassing Kate McCann apparently deposited her a voicemail message which posed: "imagine I am Madeleine?"
The defendant, 24, who a jury heard has consistently asserted she was the disappeared Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are standing trial charged with stalking Kate and Gerry McCann from June 2022 and February 2025.
On Monday, Leicester Crown Court learned phone records and information recovered from phones logged Ms Wandelt consistently asking Madeleine's mother for a biological test throughout 2023 and 2024.
Madeleine's vanishing in 2007 - as a three-year-old during a trip in Portugal - is considered the most widely reported missing child cases and continues to be unresolved.
'I Don't Want Money'
Another voicemail, presented in court, captured Ms Wandelt saying: "I realize I'm fat and unattractive like Madeleine had been, but I believe what I know."
While another instance of Ms Wandelt's one-way conversations with Mrs McCann's recording said: "Imagine there is a slight possibility that I am she? What happens next? Wouldn't that be crucial for you?"
"I am not seeking money, I possess a living here in Poland, I simply desire to know," the recording stated.
The panel was told that via electronic messages, SMS messages and calls, Ms Wandelt demanded a genetic test, sent early photographs to her phone in a effort to display a likeness to Mrs McCann's missing daughter, and stated to have "memories" from a early life with the McCanns.
The investigator, a data specialist with Leicestershire Police who collated the information, informed the court there "didn't appear to be any replies" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt furthermore communicated with acquaintances of the McCanns, as per the call data.
On October 9th, 2024, the father picked up a phone call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, declaring she had "a wrong number."
That day Ms Wandelt left a message on Mrs McCann's recording saying "I will continue and I will prove my position."
The court heard Mrs Spragg developed a relationship online with Ms Wandelt before accompanying her on a visit to the McCanns' property in the county in December 2024.
Communication data demonstrated Mrs Spragg had contacted via WhatsApp to Mrs McCann to state the news outlets had characterized Ms Wandelt as "emotionally disturbed" but that she should be considered genuine in the time before the appearance to Rothley, Leicestershire, in December 2024.
The court was told message exchanges between the two accused, in that autumn, considering attempting to obtain Mrs McCann's DNA samples from her bins or from utensils at a restaurant.
"We have to assert ourselves," Mrs Spragg told Ms Wandelt.
On the night of the visit to their residence, the defendant transmitted a text which stated: "We find ourselves sitting outside the McCanns' residence with our headlights off like investigators. I wanted to do this with Peter Andrew I never thought I would be involved in this with the McCanns."
The case ongoing.
